SWORD AND HERO PROJECT

Picture
AGE RECOMMENDATION: 14 years and older

PREREQUISITES:  Shakespeare, Key of Liberty

SWORD OF FREEDOM (Fall Semester): The American Civil War period

Sword of Freedom is the third Practice Scholar Project in the LEMI continuum. The objective of each Practice Scholar Project is to motivate the scholar to do the hard work of learning through: inspiring mentors, positive peer pressure, a culminating activity, outward motivations to choose (competitions and rewards), completing the project, and by planting seeds of determination to do the hard work.

It's North versus South all over again!

This class specifically studies the principles of freedom and the Constitution against the dramatic backdrop of the Civil War. It dares scholars to read challenging classics, to decide and discuss their opinions, and to write a research paper about one of their heroes from this time period. Scholars can look forward to an epic dart-gun battle to test their battlefield wisdom, and the opportunity to earn a Civil War era replica sword as they complete specific requirements.

EXPECTATIONS:  It is estimated that the scholars will study 5-7 hours per week preparing for this class.

HERO PROJECT (Winter Semester): A Study of World War II

This class is designed to empower our current Hero Generation to form a link to the Hero Generation of World War II. Through getting to know these amazing men and women who won the War, they will learn what qualities make a hero. They will see what is required of a Hero Generation, and gain a desire to emulate those individuals they study.

Students will be mentored by both the living and the dead as they read their stories and interview veterans. They will realize that every person has a unique mission to perform in this life. Eisenhower didn’t win the War. Churchill didn’t win the War. The man swabbing the deck did. The men who built the planes did. The women who put together the code breaking machines did. They all had their part in the ultimate victory, and it wouldn’t have happened without each and every one of them working together toward a common goal.

EXPECTATIONS:
6 hours per week and 2+ hours per week to work on above and beyond  - reading, writing, watching movies and working on presentations

MATERIALS:  All books, supplies and awards are included in tuition
