This nature-based biology course invites scholars to explore the living world with both wonder and purpose. Through field journaling, hands-on experiments, and rich class discussions, students deepen their understanding of natural patterns, sharpen critical thinking skills, and build consistent habits of learning.
The course is designed for Practice Scholars, with an optional Apprentice Scholar track available for those ready to pursue deeper challenges. Scholars should plan to spend approximately 3–5 hours per week outside of class on reading, journaling, and project work.
Students are expected to come prepared by watching assigned videos, completing readings, and bringing work to class ready for discussion or presentation. Core course practices include:
Daily field journal entries (words, sketches, or data)
Weekly accountability shares
Hands-on activities
Two formal presentations
Parents play an essential role by attending weekly mentor meetings, supporting daily habit-building at home, and ensuring each scholar has a designated Math Mentor.
As scholars progress, they will earn Field Kit Upgrades—tools such as colored pencils, journals, and straightedges—to support and deepen their nature studies.
This class runs from September through December.
