PREREQUISITES: Rise Up Science Project or Mentor Approval, 15 years or older
Language Arts & Leadership
This course strengthens advanced writing and leadership skills through intensive reading, writing, research, and mentorship. Scholars will develop persuasive and analytical writing under the guidance of class mentors and a personal writing coach, refining their voice and clarity as they take their skills to the next level.
Scholars will study the principles of Statesmanship and Leadership through the lives of historical figures who exemplified them, using biographies, original documents, and landmark speeches as inspiration for their own work.
In the first semester, scholars come face to face with great leaders from history by studying original documents, historical speeches, and biographies. They will read, write, and engage in thoughtful discussion about the historical, governmental, societal, and personal circumstances that shaped these men and women and led to their influence and greatness.
In the second semester, scholars identify leaders—historical or contemporary—who exemplify the traits of strong civic leadership: Virtue, Wisdom, Courage, Diplomacy, Inspiring Greatness in Others, and Advancing the Cause of Liberty. Scholars will research these leaders, write persuasive essays, and prepare and deliver speeches on individuals who resonate with them personally.
Throughout the year, scholars also work intentionally on developing their own leadership traits as they begin to see themselves—and one another—as individuals with civic responsibility, meaningful roles in society, and the ability to influence the world for good.
Each scholar completes a final research paper and a coordinating project that synthesizes their learning.
Scholars should plan to dedicate 15 or more hours per week to reading, writing, research, and preparation.
These classes run from September through April.
